South School Garden Club
This was the Garden Club's first year at South School! It was a great success! Students learned how to take care of a garden, how plants grow, and the parts of a plant. We share special thanks with the Glencoe PTO for supporting this new initiative at our school. Click here to view our video of our new club!
Second Grade Cultural Arts Tour of Glencoe
Purple and white balloons were flying high above Glencoe last Thursday marking the stops on a historical walking tour enjoyed by the second graders at South School. This field trip was the highlight of a curriculum unit focused on “My Community.” Students were guided through the downtown area by chaperones displaying old photographs of the town and narrating descriptions of Glencoe’s past. Along the way, the students stopped at the Historical Society where they viewed the exhibit “Play Ball: Glencoe Dreams to the Major Leagues!" and learned more about baseball and its connections to Glencoe. Enjoy these photos from our day about town! Thanks to all of the parents and volunteers who helped make this day possible for our students. We couldn't have done this without your support!

Second Graders Learn from Samantha Schneider
On May 17th, 19-year old professional cyclist Samantha “Sam” Schneider visited with our 2nd grade students. Samantha talked with the children about the importance of goal setting, teamwork, bike safety and nutrition – all in the context of her burgeoning pro cycling career. This is most fitting as we celebrate our We Care theme of Goal Setting.

Kindergarten Mystery Visitor
On Wednesday, March 24th, first grade teachers Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Wagner visited the Kindergarten classes to talk about first grade and being a Playground Pal! The children heard all about the different things they will learn in first grade, how to become a Playground Pal and even heard a story about how to prevent bullying on the playground. Students had an opportunity to try on a Playground Pals vest and learned that a Playground Pal always says, "Yes!" when asked to play. Thank you, first grade teachers, for coming to visit.
The Search for a Leprechaun
Last month, many of our students were on the trail of the South School leprechauns. These creatures are clever and quick! As you can see from the photos, we had a wonderful time looking for them. Alas, none were captured. So we'll have to try again next year!
First Grade Puppet Show: Responsible Behavior
Before Spring Break, first graders in Mrs. Krakowsky's class performed their puppet show, featuring the We Care theme of Responsible Behavior. Students wrote their own scripts and shared their puppet show with the rest of the first grade classes. Well done, Mrs. Krakowsky's class!
Whatever The Weather

Native Plant Garden
Now that fall is here, our native plants are turning various shades of yellow and golden brown. Soon they will be sleeping under a blanket of snow. We look forward to their beautiful blossoms and many more educational opportunities in the garden this spring. If you would like learn more about our South School plant garden, watch our video from our first grade fall planting day. Special thanks to the PTO for their generous support of this new initiative.
Think PINK at South School!
On Friday, November 20th, our school community participated in International Stand Up to Bullying Day by wearing pink to school. Donning pink represented our commitment to a caring school environment for all. South School was a sea of pink and students, parents and staff alike thoroughly enjoyed this event. Thank you to all who participated and for helping us promote respect for everyone!
South School Students On Ice!
This past week, we began our ice skating unit during PE classes at South School. Classes walked over to Watts and laced up their skates. They learned how to skate, how to fall safely, and a great time was had by all! Special thanks to Mr. Short, Mrs. Lee and all of our parent volunteers for helping students putting on their skates and helping us all stay safe. Skating will continue for two more weeks, weather permitting. Enjoy our photos!
Help Glencoe Outsmart Waste
Did you know you know that the Glencoe Schools are collecting CAPRI SUN drink pouches to recycle in a new way? Across our schools, we have joined in the Terracycle efforts to help upcycle these drink pouches into new items such as pencil cases and backpacks. Children may share their empty drink pouches in the collection containers within each school. Our schools earn 2˘ per pouch and we minimize the garbage produced! Thank you for your support as we participate in this collection through the remainder of the school year. Learn more by visiting the Terracycle website at http://www.terracycle.net.

What is a VOICEMETER?
Several parents have asked about the voicemeter which we are using in South School. We thought it would be nice for all of our families to have this as a tool to refer to and maybe even use at home!
