First Graders Share Courage Puppet Shows
First grade students are using puppets to teach each other WE CARE lessons.
Ms. Kooi's class presented short skits for the other first grade classes regarding the theme, Courage. Each month one of the first grade classes is responsible for writing and presenting puppet plays that teach the monthly WE CARE theme.

Second Grade Community Visitor Shares His Courage
This week, Glencoe parent Bob DiLeonardi visited with our second graders in honor of the WE CARE monthly theme of Courage. Mr. DiLeonardi has four children--two of them attend Central School and two more are at New Trier High School. Mr. DiLeonardi talked to our students about his unique physical challenges, sharing the difference between a challenge that we choose and a challenge that chooses us. Thank you, Mr. DiLeonardi, for your strength, wisdom and positive attitude. We are so glad you came to see us. Watch a video clip of Mr. DiLeonardi with our students!

On Friday, January 15th, NBC weatherman Brant Miller visited with second graders in Ms. Miller's classroom. Not only is his grandson in class, but this very special visit helped put the finishing touches on a weather unit. Thank you, Miller family, for sharing grandpa with us. We learned a lot!
What's The Matter?
First graders at South School welcomed High Tech - High Touch, a group that presented "What's The Matter?" in each first grade classroom. The visiting scientists talked with our students about different forms of matter and brought equipment so that each child could participate in related science experiments right at their desks! Thank you, Glencoe PTO, for your continued support of this program at South.
Weather or Not?
Thanks to our Glencoe PTO, High Tech - High Touch visited South School last week to bring us "Weather or Not", a culminating event for our weather unit of study in second grade. Students learned all about different kinds of weather, what causes changes in weather and were treated to many types of experiments. Enjoy these photos! Weather or Not Movie

Native Plant Garden
Now that fall is here, our native plants are turning various shades of yellow and golden brown. Soon they will be sleeping under a blanket of snow. We look forward to their beautiful blossoms and many more educational opportunities in the garden this spring. If you would like learn more about our South School plant garden, watch our video from our first grade fall planting day. Special thanks to the PTO for their generous support of this new initiative.
Think PINK at South School!

Donning pink represented our commitment to a caring school environment for all. South School was a sea of pink and students, parents and staff alike thoroughly enjoyed this event. Thank you to all who participated and for helping us promote respect for everyone!
The Air and Water Show Comes To South School!
On Tuesday, January 5th, Central School sixth graders in Mrs. Rosenson's science classes came to South School to lead a second grade science workshop. Sixth graders taught second graders about air and water through several different and interesting experiments. This exchange, which has become an annual event, is especially significant this year, because the visiting sixth graders were the original hosts of the event when they were second graders at South School. As you can see from the photos, it continues to be a positive learning experience for all of our Glencoe students. Special thanks to Mrs. Rosenson and Mrs. Briggs for bringing the sixth graders to South!
South School Students On Ice!
This past week, we began our ice skating unit during PE classes at South School. Classes walked over to Watts and laced up their skates. They learned how to skate, how to fall safely, and a great time was had by all! Special thanks to Mr. Short, Mrs. Lee and all of our parent volunteers for helping students putting on their skates and helping us all stay safe. Skating will continue for two more weeks, weather permitting. Enjoy our photos!
Help Glencoe Outsmart Waste
Did you know you know that the Glencoe Schools are collecting CAPRI SUN drink pouches to recycle in a new way? Across our schools, we have joined in the Terracycle efforts to help upcycle these drink pouches into new items such as pencil cases and backpacks. Children may share their empty drink pouches in the collection containers within each school. Our schools earn 2¢ per pouch and we minimize the garbage produced! Thank you for your support as we participate in this collection through the remainder of the school year. Learn more by visiting the Terracycle website at http://www.terracycle.net.

A big South School thank you to our PTO for a fabulous Readers Are Leaders week. Not only did we have the opportunity to hear from many talented professionals about how being a reader helps them in their daily work, but we concluded our celebration with a special DEAR time with our parents. We are especially grateful to Maggie Scheyer, Michelle Soble, Nancy Bearwald and Karen Leeds for their hard work and preparation for this special annual event. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered for us and for your continued support of life long literacy and learning for our students.
