On Friday, October 29th the South School Halloween Parade will return! Our parade will begin at 9:05 a.m. Students will exit the doors near the playground, walk around on Randolph and Madison and finish the parade on Linden. As safety is our biggest concern, we ask that costumes do not include any weapons or masks that could impact the ability to see. Our parade will also take longer this year as classes will be spaced out. Please note that we will not have an alternative in case of inclement weather.
TO KEEP THE FUN GOING, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1st WILL BE AN ALL-SCHOOL PAJAMA DAY!

SPANISH AT SOUTH SCHOOL
Every year on November 1st and November 2nd, many Hispanic people throughout the world celebrate the holiday Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Students at South will begin learning about this celebration of life this week. We will focus on important cultural symbols, such as sugar skulls, flowers, and butterflies. We will also talk about remembering loved ones lost (family, pets, fictional characters, etc.) and celebrating their lives.
SOUTH CELEBRATES DIVERSITY
Looking for diverse books to read at home?
Please take a moment to visit our SOUTH CELEBRATES DIVERSITY site for many options! You will find a variety of books (non-fiction, fiction, and books available from the South CLC) based on the theme for October - GLOBAL DIVERSITY AWARENESS MONTH. This site will be updated each month with new offerings.
SOUTH IS SPECIAL!
SOUTH IS SPECIAL! Each month we will highlight one ‘special-area’ class in our newsletter! Find out what’s been happening in the CRAWFORD LEARNING CENTER with Mrs. Stalter!
The CLC is once again full of students and books are flying off the shelves!
The year began with learning the expectations of the CLC, fun games, and of course fabulous read-alouds. Students are enjoying finding the perfect book(s) each week and are thrilled to share them with each other and their teachers.
South School celebrated International Dot Day (week) in the middle of September. Millions of students all over the world celebrate this day by reading The Dot written by Peter H. Reynolds as a way to encourage creativity, courage, and leaving your own mark. After reading, students made their mark by decorating the dots that are all now hanging in the front of the CLC.
This past week, all students learned about the Monarch Book Award. Students enjoy helping to decide the winning book for this Illinois book award. They will participate along with other elementary students from across the state. We will read the 20 nominated books together, vote for our favorite, and send it to be tallied with other school votes. Students are excited to see familiar past winners and the amazing new books we will enjoy reading together!
INSTRUCTION DURING COVID-19 QUARANTINE
When students are placed in quarantine due to COVID-19, South School teachers will provide access to asynchronous instruction. Teachers will share learning activities and students will have access to their school-issued iPad. Classroom teachers will provide a brief daily zoom check-in to keep students on track. We will also provide pre-recorded videos and lessons from our special-area teachers.
This year, all registration will be done online using our Family Access portal. Families will complete a registration form and upload all residency documents via Skyward Family Access.
Please follow the LINK for registration guidelines.
In order to register, your child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2021.
