At South School, we dedicate the first 15 minutes of each school day to our work with SEL. Students and teachers participate in greetings, hand shakes, role-playing and our Second Step curriculum in an effort to explore the explicit SEL skills and competencies. Here's what's happening in each of our grade levels under the umbrella of Social Emotional Learning:
Currently at South School, classes are beginning to talk about Emotional Management, how to calm down, and identifying strong feelings, such as disappointment and frustration. Students brainstorm, during their class meetings, different strategies we can use to calm down, such as taking deep breaths or distracting ourselves with an activity, such as playing outdoors or bouncing a ball with a friend. Ask your child what they are talking about with their Second Step cards and talk as a family about these important tools.
